Friday, May 1, 2009 @04:43pm EDT Migratory birds are flying north from the Gulf Coast, Central and South America. Many stop at Presque Isle to rest and feed before crossing Lake Erie.
The peninsula is in what's known as the North Atlantic Flyway, sort of a super highway of migrating birds. The month of May, but especially mid May, is the best time to see some of these birds. Bird watchers come from all over the US to see them Presque Isle State Park and the PI Audubon Society are holding the Festival of Birds May 9-10th at the Tom Ridge Environmental Center and Presque Isle.
