Reported by: Cassandra Garrison Tuesday, Jan 15, 2008 @04:40pm EST If you're using those compact fluorescent light bulbs, you're already on the right track towards helping the environment. But the mission doesn't end when the light goes out.
Some of you might be ready to toss them, but not so fast...our community has a special plan for cfl’s. Because the bulbs contain mercury, it's extremely hazardous to throw them in the trash. If they break, they could release vapors that might be toxic to you and your family. The county can help you recycle the bulbs. The goal by next year is to have a permanent site where people can take items like cfl’s all year long. Until that happens, there will be events called Hazardous Household Waste Collections. Three events are planned for 2008. Community officials want to encourage you to come to these free collections to prevent any issues with mercury. The dates for the collection events have not been set yet. Again, they will be open to all county residents and free of charge. If you have bulbs you'd like to get rid of right away, you can also drop them off or, for a fee, have them picked up by Environmental Coordination Services and Recycling in Cochranton.
