  • EMHE Neighborhood Work
    Reported by: Jeremy Beecher

    Tuesday, Jun 30, 2009 @04:30pm EDT

All the rain did slow down the work at Erie's Extreme Home Makeover, but it didn't stop hundreds of volunteers who are working to make the entire neighborhood a better place.

Clara Ward is certainly not the only one getting a home makeover, although clearly hers is the most extreme.

The heavy rain did cause some delays this morning. They had to be extra careful pouring the concrete sidewalks out front, and the backyard basketball court -- set to be done last night -- still isn't poured.

But inside work is humming along, as it is in the surrounding blocks.

Hundreds of volunteers -- many from Grace Church in McKean -- are landscaping each and every house for several blocks in each direction.

They’re also taking on some special projects like building a wheelchair ramp for a house with two elderly wheelchair bound residents inside.

Neither of whom have been able to go outside on their own for years.

Janina Morawska, a neighbor, says, "I have no words for this. I never will thank them enough for that."

Aaron Lundberg of Grace Church says, "It helps to give the neighborhood a whole new feel. Everyone feels pride again. Everyone feels like ‘oh I remember when it was like this when I was a kid,’ you know you hear comments like that."

Another treat for the neighborhood tonight is a free concert by the Duke Sherman Blues Band. It’s open to neighbors and everyone else. It starts tonight at 7 at the Holy Trinity Church.
