Reported by: Dan Wells Thursday, May 1, 2008 @10:35pm EDT East Erie residents say an increase in violent activity in their neighborhoods needs to stop and they're taking their message of "peace" to the streets.
In recent weeks there's been various crimes taking place on the city's east side. Tonight the mayor, a council member and the community say it will stop with dialog and awareness. "these signs came from mothers in Buffalo..who had children slain in drug and gun violence and as we were traveling through Buffalo we noticed the impact these signs had in that community...they were everywhere...and seeing the escalating violence in our town...we figured it could have an impact here. " - Daryl Craig, Area Resident Residents say they blame the growing crime on warmer weather. They also say it doesn't help the situation that residents are afraid to provide information to the police. In a non-press event...we found Erie Mayor Joe Sinnott, Councilman Curtis Jones Jr. and dozens of other area residents taking this message of peace to the corners of Parade Street from East 6th to 12th streets. City of Erie officials say it's a great message to support. |
