  • Hand-Counting Ballots for County Executive Race
    Reported by: John Treanor

    Wednesday, Nov 4, 2009 @11:38am EST

Election night might be over, but we still do not have a county executive.

Hundreds of crucial votes are being counted by hand at the courthouse to decide a winner.

This race for county executive is coming down to the last hand-counted vote.

Less than 400 votes separate republican Mike Kerner and democrat Barry Grossman in the race for county executive - Grossman has a slight 341 vote lead.

But hundreds of votes are still out there.

If you remember, the absentee ballot machine was broken. Now, 1250 votes have to be hand counted by election staff at the courthouse.

It echoes of four years ago when Dale McBrier and Mark DiVecchio were separated by a handful of votes. This same process was used to find a winner then.

Erie County Clerk of Elections Doug Smith says, "When you get into a close election, obviously you have a lot of eyes on you and we’ve got at stake here at the county it amazes me that 4 years later were in the same place in terms of a process."

This is going to take all day, and the odds are good that it’s not going to be over then.

There are still four voting machines that need to be counted, and if the difference is one percent or less the state mandates a recount.
