  • Bed-Bug Sniffing Dogs
    Reported by: Kim Thomas

Exterminators are using another tool in the on-going battle against bed-bugs - but it's not your typical bug spray.

We’ve heard of scent detection dogs in the case of arson and drug investigations... but how about using a dog to sniff out live bed bugs?

Jack is a certified bed-bug sniffing dog. He’s trained to detect the scent of live bugs and viable eggs. As the problem with bed-bug infestation grows, more exterminators are turning to this as a solution.

Henry Fox of Ehrlich Pest Control says, "People are about thirty percent accurate in finding them, the dog, I believe, is over 90%. Because they're small dogs, they're easy to transport, they can get under beds, they can get behind areas."

Bed bugs can be very difficult for the human eye to detect. You may not even know you have them in your home unless you're being bitten. It can be a very extensive process for exterminators to determine whether there is an infestation.

"Bed bugs have a hidden biology; they're in cracks and crevices. They're gonna position themselves near you, a blood meal, so beds and furniture," Fox says.

Jack is trained just as other scent detection dogs are trained. A container of bed bugs is hidden for Jack to retrieve, and when he picks up on the scent, he notifies his handler.

Gretta MacIntyre, Jack's handler, says, "It's very important if you're having a problem and you're trying to locate where the problem is, if you're in a large facility with multiple dwelling units and you need to pinpoint where the infestation is."

Once Jack finds the bed-bugs, exterminators know exactly where to spray, hopefully putting an end to the potentially itchy infestation.

"They’re very grateful to Jack; I just drive him around and hold the end of the lead - it’s all about Jack," MacIntyre says.

At Ehrlich Pest Control, they say they're getting calls several times a week regarding problems with bed bugs.

Dogs like Jack make it easier and faster to take care of that problem.
