  • Update on Cats Confiscated From Union City Home
    Reported by: Kim Thomas

    Friday, Nov 6, 2009 @05:20pm EST

One day after dozens of cats, dead and living, were taken out of a union city home, the living felines are doing o.k.

As we mentioned Thursday, 25 living cats were taken out the Union City home by animal cruelty officers. However, after officially counting the dead carcasses found, that number has increased from 70 to 82. After confiscating the cats from the home Thursday, officials took the living felines to North East Veterinary Hospital where their health was evaluated and assessed. Only one of the cats had to be euthanized, the remainder have been put on a health care plan and remain under the care of the humane society.

When they were found, they were covered in fleas and some appeared to have respiratory problems, but overall, officials believe they will end up being o.k. The cats will probably stay at the humane society for a couple of months as they work to regain their health. There haven't been any animal cruelty charges filed in this case yet. Officials say, the cats still belong to union city woman until a court rules otherwise. But the director of the humane society says, as long as the cats are in their care, they will do their best to keep them healthy.

"The cats were in pretty good shape considering what they had been through. Because of their condition when they came to us, there's still some risk to their health," said Joe Grisanti, The Humane Society of NWPA.

Animal experts have classified this woman, whose name hasn't been released, as an animal hoarder. For more information, click here.
