  • Erie County Councilman-Elect Ebert Beeman
    Reported by: John Treanor

    Monday, Nov 9, 2009 @11:05am EST

As the results of Tuesday’s election set in, we're going to meet one of the most interesting characters now in Erie politics. We sat down with Erie county councilman-elect Ebert Beeman for a look at a different kind of politician.

“If this would've happened four years ago I wouldn't have got to first base, but times have changed and they’re going to get worse; if everyone was like me things would be better," Beeman says.

Ebert Beeman believes he's the next black sheep of Erie politics - unapologetic, confident, and not afraid to give his opinion. The longtime libertarian turned republican is taking his conservative, often viewed as radical ideas, from his small notary business in Waterford to the center of Erie County Council.

“Economic reality has set in much more recently since the primary. The economy has just gotten worse, it’s going to continue to get worse," he says.

So how did a guy like Ebert, who supports across the board pay cuts, win a primary, let alone an election? Well, the answer goes back to the last presidential election. When the county's 6th district was Ron Paul territory, Beeman, himself a fervent Paul supporter, managed to ride the excitement of that campaign through this year.

"If they support someone willing to fight the system, they'll vote for me."

No stranger to fighting the system, Ebert has one big difference to his Washington counterpart - trouble with the law. He’s been in federal court for the past several months on charges of tax evasion... the last time he filed a claim?

"The last time I filed an income tax return was 1994. And I did 3 to 4 years at the same time and I got 8 or 9 grand back, and I thought I’d do the same thing again. It didn’t work out that way cuz I mad to much money."

Taxes aren’t his only problem.... Beeman owns a truck but can't drive it after being arrested for having a suspended license, no insurance, and no registration. So why was his license taken away?

"When they asked for a social security number years ago I didn't feel it was any of their business so I put down the wrong social security number," says Beeman.

: If people look at you and wonder if you’re going to take this seriously…?
Beeman: Sure I’m going to take it seriously. I want to be Erie’s Ron Paul; I’m going to support the constitution 100% of the time.

Only time will tell if Beeman is ready for Erie County Council - or if council is ready for him. He's set to be sworn in in just two months.
