We’re talking about a green home tour taking place across the country. Ray Bahr's home is just one stop on the green buildings open house tour. He uses the sun to help heat his water and power his home. Bahr says, "The house is a passive designed solar house with lots of south facing glass." Bahr has also taken smaller steps inside his home. He has in-floor heating, uses compact fluorescent light bulbs, and has heavy blinds that help keep the heat out in the summer. He also has a bunch of batteries that store some of the energy he gets from the sun. “We’re at the end of the utility line and in case we have an ice storm or something like that, we didn't want to have to buy a generator so we have a battery box system for emergency back-up power for several day and with the solar panels we can actually stay off grid for a while." On Saturday, Bahr will open up his home to the public, so others will get a chance to see how he goes green. Chris Schaefer, the owner of Solar and Wind FX, helped organize this local leg of the nationwide tour. "It’s one thing to try before you buy, this is a situation where you can really get from the actual homeowners to see how well does this actually work,” says Schaefer. |
