Health Care Rally at Dahlkemper's Office

A final vote on health care reform appears to be on the way.

No one's vote is as important as that of Erie’s congresswoman.

With five days and a razor-thin margin, Congresswoman Kathy Dahlkemper is not saying which way she'll vote. Tonight she's getting pressure from all sides.

It's not the first rally outside Congresswoman Kathy Dahlkemper's bayfront office, but it might be the most urgent.

The house is set to vote on health care reform in just days, and the still undecided Dahlkemper could potentially make or break healthcare reform in the U.S.

And from union members to clergy, just about everyone at the rally has a personal reason why she should vote yes.

Jim Longley of SEIU Local 22 says, "I have good insurance but that goes away every contract to the point where it's just not worth anything anymore. We need health care in this country."

Pastor Al Gesler of Christ the Redeemer Lutheran Church says, "Our Lord said we need to heal people and the medical profession that's what their job is. And we need to make it available to people who really need it."

But not everyone is so happy with the bill. The language against abortion is not as strong as it was in the house bill Dahlkemper voted on last year. And for that reason, many pro-life advocates in the third district hope this bill fails.

Tim Broderick of People for Life says, “We’re going to have government officials forcing insurance companies to cover abortion. And there's no doubt this is going to greatly expand the numbers of abortions.”

So far Dahlkemper has been staunchly pro-life. But while many in the 3rd hope she'll remain that way, others say the need for reform is bigger than that.

Barbara Bowen of Erie says, "I just had a husband passed away a couple years ago and we had trouble even paying his bills. And I don’t want my kids to have to do the same thing for me."

Dahlkemper's office declined to make her available for an interview, but a spokesperson said Dahlkemper won't make up her mind until she receives the final bill.

A vote is expected to happen within just a few days.
