City Apartment Inspection
The City of Erie's new apartment inspection law seems to be making its mark, but would you believe inspections haven't even started yet.
The program which aims to reduce blighted properties and improve safety was adopted by Erie City Council in 2006. The inspection law mandates an annual license fee of 40 dollars for each rental unit, as well as safety inspections every two years.
"it's been very encouraging with the rental licensing program, we had that warm up and a lot of people are working on their properties." Andy Zimmerman, City of Erie, Bureau of Code Enforcement
The license application and fee for the rental unit program is due to the city by April 30th, and inspections are expected to start in June.
If a rental unit fails the inspection, landlords won't receive the occupancy permit the city requires.
The program was prompted in part by city officials' concern over several fatal house and apartment fires that took place in Erie.
