Shortly after listing a room for rent on Craig's List, one Millcreek woman says she believes she almost fell into huge money scam. Now she wants others in the community to beware. Some scammers are apparently taking advantage of the growing popularity of Craig's List to victimize people trying to rent their homes or apartments. The scheme is basically a fake check scam, with a twist. Dawn Caughey received almost identical e-mail's when she listed a room for rent on Craigs List. The replies came from several people claiming to live in England and Africa who were moving to Erie. The e-mails claim the individuals' would be sending Dawn Caughey a rental and moving check, which would be for more money than needed. Now, at that point Dawn Caughey got out of this scam but we're learning if she would have continued with the plot she would have been asked to deposit that fake check into her account, deduct the rent, and send the balance back to the crook. The phony check, wouldn't have been discovered for a few days and by then Dawn Caughey would have sent the scammer a very real check for hundreds or thousands of dollars. If you believe you have been a victim of this scam or its come across your computer call the Pennsylvania Attorney General's Office.
