West Nile

watch video
It's that time of year again...warm weather and mosquitoes.

Officials from the Erie County Health Department say they are getting ready to battle West Nile again.

Crews from the Erie County Health Department will begin setting up mosquitoes traps in several areas throughout Erie County.

"because the weather's been cold with temperatures in the 40's recently during the last two weeks, we haven't found to much activity but starting next Monday we will be going full force." Jeff Bresslin, Erie County Health Department.

Officials say they will set up over one hundred sites for full scale trapping, larva sighting and dipping.

Officials also told us it's also important for you to do your part in the fight against West Nile.

They say you shouldn't leave any standing water in your yard and you should also remember to clean out your gutters, if they're holding water.  Gutters are apparently one of the best places for mosquitoes to breed.

We also asked if health officials can predict how this summer will be.

"we obviously know...the more wetness we have in the winter and during the spring the more it has an effect on the mosquito production but its anybodys guess this year." Jeff Bresslin, Erie County Health Department.

Currently there is no vaccine, no specific treatment, or medication to cure West Nile Virus.
