Honoring Police Officers

watch video
Dozens of local police, sheriffs deputies, and state police filled Perry Square today.  Authorities were in the park  to honor officers who have fallen in the line of duty.

A patriotic wreath marks the spot where a downtown Erie monument honors 20 local and state police officers who have died while in the line of duty during the last century.

"it's important for us to remember the people who have given their lives for the people of erie county." John Harrington, President, Erie County F.O.P

The memorial ceremony included a military gun salute, prayers for family members, and taps also took place.

Dozens of officers from local police departments, the Erie County Sheriff's Department and the Pennsylvania State Police proudly saluted the honored officers.

"having presided at trials where unfortunately there were tragic events involving police officers...It reminds me of just how challenging this work is. " Judge John Bozza, Erie County - Court of Common Pleas

"it certainly hits home to everyone involve in law enforcement and their families and its good to have these services to remind everyone not to be complacent. " Randy Bowers, Erie Police Department

Flags remain at half staff at the memorial sight as those local heroes continue to be remembered in the hearts of the community.

Just this year, three Pennsylvania law enforcement officials lost their lives in the line of duty.
