New Helmet Law Considered

watch video
Helmet LawMay marks Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Month in Pennsylvania. While the state did away with its mandatory helmet law in 2003, there is a chance it may be reinstated. A state representative from Alleghany County introduced the bill in March that would repeal the optional use of helmets. The data from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation shows that since the repeal of the helmet law, motorcycles deaths have increased by one-third. Representative Dan Frankel of Alleghany wants the helmet law back in place to save taxpayers money for the higher health care costs caused by the rise in motorcycle crashes. The bill has ten sponsors, none from northwestern Pennsylvania. Its in the House Transportation Committee for consideration. Many bikers say if the bill makes it to the floor for a vote and its approved, they will reluctantly put their helmets back on. Bikers also said they think the bill has surfaced thanks to last summers crash of Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, who was not wearing a helmet while riding his motorcycle in Pittsburgh.
