Erie Zoo President Says Farewell
It's the end of an era at the Erie Zoo. The long-time zoo president announced his retirement, Tuesday.
Jim Rhea says he'll be handing over the reins to another zoo guy July 1st.
Satisfaction... that's the word Jim Rhea uses to describe what the last 40 years at the Erie Zoo has meant to him. Challenges of course have come along with all of the memories and experiences. As president and CEO since 1974, Rhea has spent every month and every year trying to find the funds to keep the zoo in running order, which hasn't been an easy task.
Rhea says he plans on continuing his presence at the zoo, but in a small degree. He will sit on the board of directors.
Rhea says his most memorable moments include all of the animal births he's experienced since he began his first job at the zoo in 1966.
Erie "Zoo Guy" Scott Mitchell will take over as President and CEO. Cynthia Kreider, the zoo's general curator, will be the Zoo Director.
