Mercyhurst Neighbors React

watch video
There will be no more July 4th fireworks at Mercyhurst's hilltop campus. The celebration could be moving to the bayfront. Mercyhurst's neighbors are having mixed feelings now that the party has come to an end. "All up and down the block here, all around the entire campus, in fact, people had parties for many years, so it's rather disappointing," says Bill Gross. Gross and his family hold an annual Independence Day picnic that draws 40 to 60 people. He says the Mercyhurst fireworks display was always the most exciting part of the day. "We're still planning on having a party, but a lot of people will be disappointed," says Gross. Other neighbors are happy to see the July 4th bash come to an end. "There's not much parking around here unless you park in somebody's driveway or on their lawn or something like that," says neighbor Fred Sipple. Mercyhurst College will donate $500,000 to the City of Erie over three years to help fund a planned fireworks display on Presque Isle Bay.
