watch video

Erie, PA ---

226,870 new cases of breast cancer have been or will be diagnosed during 2012. 39,510 women will die from breast cancer in 2012. The good news is that there are currently 29 million breast cancer survivors in the United States. These numbers represent mothers, daughters, sisters, wives, and friends to all of us. Increasing survival rates, and finding a cure for breast cancer is personal.

T.J.Johnson's wife, Linda is a survivor. Mike Margraves mother was not so lucky. Julie Lokahi also lost her mother to breast cancer. Team Lifestar lost one of their players, Kathy Burick.

It is so personal to the men and women playing in the Adult Division 5 League

of Erie Youth Hockey, that 5 years ago they created a fundraiser called "Pink at the Rink". It has grown from a one hockey game event to an entire afternoon and evening of hockey fun. The last 4 events raised over $8,500 for the American Cancer Society.

The 5th Annual Pink at the Rink will be held at the Ice Center of Erie, 3515 McClelland Avenue, on Sunday, October 21st. The fun begins with a "Skate with the Otters" session from 3:15pm to 4:15pm. Participating players include Connor McDavid, Nick Betz, Jake Evans, Stephen Harper, Hayden Hodgson, and Devin Williams.  There are even rumors that a couple of former Otters, currently playing in the NHL, might also make an appearance. Cost to skate is only $5.00 per person.

From 4:30pm to 10:30pm the Division 5 players from all 10 teams will pad up with pink to fend off their league rivals. These 5 games pit team against team for bragging rights. Admission is FREE. Come see the Med Mechs play the Dynamos, then watch the Misfits take on the Other Puckers. Molson faces off against Josh Walters' Team at 7:00pm, followed by a rousing game between the Hitmen and The Tools. The final game will see the Flatliners take on Lifestar.

There will also be representatives from Dove Chocolate Discoveries, Tastefully Simple, Scentsy, and Crocheted Critters & More by Christina Burns offering a variety of items for sale. A percentage of these sales will benefit this event. Pink at the Rink logo apparel will also be on sale. There will also be Chinese Auction for you to win.

Even though death rates from breast cancer have been declining since 1990, it

is still the 2nd leading cause of cancer deaths in women (exceeded only by lung cancer).

Please join us on Sunday, October 21st. Isn't it personal for you too?
