GE Offers Early Retirement To 75 Employees
According to the Erie Times News, Erie's General Electric plant wants 75 of its employees, who are nearing retirement, to accept an early buyout.
Employees in that category were sent letters on Monday extending that offer.
A "well chronicled" drop in demand for mining equipment is the reason given for the workforce changes.
Cuts in overtime hours and short term layoffs are also on the table for some workers.
These steps, by Erie County's largest employer, come on the heels of GE's announcement that it is ramping up production at its newly opened plant in Fort Worth, Texas.
