Erie Unemployment Down Slightly in October

watch video
HARRISBURG (NOVEMBER 28) -The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for the Erie Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) decreased one-tenth of a percentage point to 7.7 percent in October. Although this small decline followed four consecutive months of rate increases for the MSA, the unemployment rate was two-tenths below the previous year. Among the 14 MSAs in Pennsylvania, Erie held the seventh lowest rate in October. The statewide rate fell to 8.1 percent, down one-tenth over the month, while the national rate ticked up one-tenth to 7.9 percent.
In October, seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs dropped 1,600 in the Erie MSA to 131,900. Jobs in the MSA have decreased for three consecutive months, falling by a total of 4,400 jobs since July. Prior to this three month run however, the MSA had six consecutive months of job gains, with 6,000 jobs added over that time. Erie's October job total was up 600 from the previous year. Detailed industry data for the MSA is not seasonally adjusted (see below).
A nominal drop of 100 jobs in education and health services appeared to be a major contributor to the seasonally adjusted decline seen in the MSA. This movement diverges from the trends of the past 10 years.
As the busy tourist months ended and entertainment & recreation businesses cut seasonal jobs, leisure and hospitality fell 900 over the month.
Some schools and universities continued to add staff in October, increasing state government jobs by 200 and pushing local government jobs up 400.
