November 28, 2012 - A large gas leak on the city's east side caused crews to evacuate several houses this morning.

Crews were dispatched just after 10am after a water crew hit a medium pressure gas line in the 300 block of East 2nd Street.

The Erie Fire Department, National Fuel and EmergyCare responded, closing the street for most of the morning.

Houses on the street were evacuated because of the gas smell.

One woman was transported to UPMC Hamot as a precaution.

The leak is under control now.

"Gas was escaping quite a bit, but what our crew did was evacuate homes in the area and secure the scene," said Jeff Carroll, Erie Fire Department Deputy Chief. "We were ready to shut the power off it need be but National Fuel was able to get the line shut down pretty quick."

The Erie Red Cross opened a warming center at the FirstUnitedMethodistChurch at 7th and Sassafras for anyone who has been evacuated from their home.

The street should be open with everything back to normal by this afternoon.
