Marine Corps holds Toys for Tots Drive at VA

DECEMBER 1, 2012-The day of giving continued at Veteran Affairs today...

As hundreds helped spread holiday cheer by donating to Toys for Tots.

Generous Erieites donated toys by the crateful to the Erie Marine Corps Reserve's annual Toys for Tots drive.

"This has been a mission of the Marine Corps reserves for over sixty years now, and it's just something for us. We take pride in allows giving back to the community who looks out for us," says First Sergeant Scott Hesson of the United States Marine Corps.

First sergeant Hesson has worked with Toys for Tots for the past three years.

He says this toy drive is so important because the toys stay here in Erie County and go to local kids.

"There's people out there who could really use the help and a toy here, a toy there, a dollar here a dollar there... Everything done here stays here."

The event sponsored by Coldwell Banker was filled with family fun.

It included a Chinese auction along with face painting and a visit from Mr. and Mrs. Claus.

"Seeing the kids come through, I'm just so happy we can help," says volunteer Marian Ruggiero.

Marine officials say there are more than 7,800 kids in Erie in needs of toys.

"All of us have grown up and had our troubled times and be able to give back and not expect anything in return... It's an internal pride," says Hesson.

If you want to donate to Toys for Tots, stations will be set up across Erie County.

This Sunday another toy drive will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Presque Isle Downs and Casino.

I wish the Toys for Tots program ran a lot longer than it does, our Credit Union in Greenville, only had the box there for only one week...hardly time for many to put things into it...THAT is very disappointing!!
