The man convicted of killing an Erie woman back in 1994 will spend the rest of his life behind bars.

Jose Marrero was convicted of first degree murder for strangling and killing an elderly woman back in 1994.

Marrero was put on death row three years ago, but was able to break free from the sentence.

The First Assistant District Attorney Robert Sambroak tells us the United States Supreme Court ruled Marrero was mentally challenged and agreed to spare him the death sentence.

Sambroak says Marrero's appeal was denied, and he will spend life in jail.

Mentally [censored] and criminally violent - sounds like a typical resident of trashcan Erie to me.
