Gov Corbett Calls for Moment of Silence Friday Morning

December 20, 2012 - Governor Tom Corbett today called for a moment of silence at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, in remembrance of the shooting victims at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

"We take this opportunity to think of all the people in Connecticut whose happiness was shattered in just a few minutes one week ago. We mourn the loss of these innocent lives and pray for their heartbroken families and friends who are coping with their grief,'' Corbett said.

"I invite all Pennsylvanians to join me in this moment of respect and reflection,'' Corbett said.

On Wednesday, Connecticut Governor Dannel P. Malloy asked governors across the country to join the residents of his state in a moment of reflection Friday. Malloy said the tragedy has extended "beyond Newtown, beyond the borders of Connecticut, and has spread across the nation and the world."

In Connecticut, Malloy has also requested that all houses of worship and government buildings to ring bells 26 times during that moment in honor of each of the victims killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

After learning of the school shooting last Friday, Corbett immediately ordered Pennsylvania flags lowered to half-staff.
