Penn Dot Officials Urge Motorists to Take Caution

DECEMBER 26, 2012- As the high winds, chilly temps and snow came down in ErieCounty, everyone agreed on one thing....

"Stay off roads," says Marion Sanders of Erie.

"Stay home... Cause it's bad... Real bad," says Kayla Arduini.

"Stay home, go home..  Roads are terrible everywhere... snowing so bad... can't keep up," says David Weschler of Empire Snow Management.

The snowfall began at noon on Wednesday and continued into the evening hours...causing drivers to slow down or risk spinning out...

"Slow down... take your time... don't be in a rush.. Just everything's bad... don't get mad at each other and slow down," says Kayla Arduini.

Local plowing businesses and Penn Dot crews kept busy and hit up routes across the county as quickly as possible.... Penn Dot even beefed up its staff.

"We put out full for b shift and brought extra person out... Now carrying people over," says Darrell Chapman, Penn Dot Assistant County Manager.

Penn Dot officials say they are used to conditions like this.

With 40 trucks on the road... 21,000 tons of salt on hand... they're ready, but they urge you to take caution...

"If you need to get out expect the unexpected... We're out covering 38 routes."

And for David Weschler, a 13 year snow plowing veteran at empire snow management, he offers these wise words...

"Wait it out... It'll be over soon," says Weschler.
