Snowy Sidewalks in Millcreek Raise Concern

watch video

January 3, 2013 - Snowy sidewalks can be dangerous, especially along a stretch of Peach Street in Millcreek Township.

Sidewalks along busy Peach Street between Kuntz Road and West Grandview Boulevard in Millcreek were still covered in snow, days after the last storm, causing concern for some viewers.

Brand new sidewalks in Millcreek Township along Peach Street to improve pedestrian traffic are courtesy of a $4.2 million dollar PennDot project.

Those sidewalks were impassable after a measurable amount of snow.

So who's in charge of clearing the sidewalks?

According to the Millcreek Township ordinance, "The owners of all properties which abut a street or state highway within whose right of way a sidewalk has been constructed shall be responsible for the proper care, maintenance and condition of said sidewalk."

It goes on to read, "The owner's duty shall extend but not be limited to removal of snow, ice and debris."

"If someone does have a complaint, they give us a call, we let the zoning office know what's going on and we notify the property owners that a complaint was filed," said Joe Kujawa, Millcreek supervisor.

While traveling on Peach Street, you could see pedestrians who were forced to walk around snow mounds and into the street.

Many businesses had snow covered sidewalks, but were clearing them Thursday afternoon.

Meanwhile, another issue in Millcreek Township during snow storms are cars parking in the road.

This is a warning for the next time we get hit with snow.

"If you park on the street in Millcreek Township, one, it's illegal in the winter months, you're not allowed to do that," said Kujawa. "Number two, if you park there in the next snow storm you're going to get towed."

Wow I hope this is out of context a bit or I believe Supervisor Kujawa just threatened most of my neighbors and guest that may come to their home.
