Owner of Pit Bull Talks About Dog's Death

watch video

JANUARY 16, 2013- Ashley Gantz says she is still in shock after finding out her 7-year- old rescue Pit Bull Ruby was shot and killed by police Tuesday morning.

Gantz tells us the past day has been a whirlwind and what has been reported by police about her dog is false...

"Hearing she's a nuisance to the neighborhood and she killed all these animals was just a lie," says Gantz.

Police initially received calls that ruby was on the loose in the 300 block of East 30th Street... A street away from Gantz's home...

A mother called saying the dog was fiercely growling and barking and her kids couldn't get in the car because of the dog...

"She was shot because she was a Pit Bull... Had she been a golden retriever or a Labrador she would've been...  I'd still have my girl here."

Local animal experts say it dates back to training and sometimes Pit Bulls are given a bad reputation...  And this could have happened with any dog...

"A Shih Tzu could be just as aggressive... As a Pit Bull... It's about ownership and leadership of the brand," Says Liz Freitag, owner of Peninsula Pups Doggie Daycare.

Elicia Pace of the Humane Society says what the police did was standard procedure... she says what happened is a shame but people were in danger...

"We have laws in tow that say your dog must be restrained... this was a case of stray pit bull harassing individuals..."

As for Gantz, she still wants an explanation...

"All I know is she's in garbage bag somewhere and shot her.   And in garbage bag..."

Ashley Gantz tells us she still has no idea where Ruby's body is...

She is hoping someone from the city will get in touch with her...

She tells us she may want to cremate her dog.

If you are going to CHOOSE to have a PitBull, then you'd better get used to this sort of thing. Too many (165 last year)police have been attacked with all the attendant expenses to the cities... so yes, police ARE going to shoot and hopefully kill an attacking dog or one at large. If you want this kind of dog, KEEP IT CONFINED. If you want this kind of dog then be prepared to face the parents of the child your dog mauled or killed. Be prepared to pay the the medical bills of the person your dog attacks. Go ahead and be prepared to face the owner of the pet your dog just killed or mauled and if it survived, be prepared to pay the vet bills. Just don't go about whining about the consequences of YOUR CHOICE of dog. YOU CHOSE that path...you COULD have chose a less higher risk dog. WHY would anyone deliberately choose a dog with 200 years of attacking and savaging unless they had some sociopathic tendencies? Stop sniveling.

What is the obsession with owning a "pit bull" ? Why not a different dog if a stigma exists with this breed?

Here we go agan. Another Pit Bull gunned down and plastered all over the news as the act being justified. Its sad how some poor ownership and immoral people have given a breed, known as the "nanny breed" in the early 1900's because of their love for a family and especially children, such a bad reputation. As a Pit Bull owner Im upset. My Pitt loves visitors and especially my son and 4 nephews who range in age from 3 to 9. Any dog can be mean and attack people or other animals depending on how they are raised. Also, "standard procedure"? Its odd how Pits are the only dogs subject to "standard procedure". Not all blame is on the police though. As the last comment posted says, "keep better track of your pets!"

I live next door to three rescue dogs and not one of them is very friendly especially towards children. The owner was the one who informed me of that. So much for your theory of being "checked out thoroughly." Keep better track of your pets! This is a litttle off subject, but can we make it illegal to own a pet period if you receive any kind of assistance? If you can't afford to support your family and yourself, what business do you have owning a pet?

I'm thinking that the one who called the Police didn't like Pit Bulls, and of course Ruby was probably barking at her and the kids because she didn't know them, or maybe wanted to play, ALL dogs bark and romp when they want to play! Ruby WAS a rescue, so it means she WAS checked out throughly to make sure she was NOT aggressive! And at times, ALL dogs can get away from their owners, they break a leash, go over fences, etc..WHY didn't the Animal Control tranq Ruby instead of her getting killed? " Elicia Pace of the Humane Society says what the police did was standard procedure"....that is BULL, and she knows it, not EVERY dog gets shot that is running loose or barking!!! It WAS because Ruby was a Pitty that she was shot, no bones about it!!
