How Can You Prepare For The Snow?

January 22, 2013

How prepared would you be if you ended up stuck in your car during a snowstorm?

JET 24's Danielle Woods was in that predicament last night and wants to tell us how prepared she was last night.

"I was not too prepared at all. I drive a small car and ended up stuck in the road. Thank goodness I was close to home, but now -- after today -- I know all the things I should have in my car in the case of an emergency," says Danielle.

Snowy roads are a danger ... Something even the best drivers can't handle.

Even if you have four- or all-wheel drive,

David Poor is the AAA Regional President. He says having good tires will help keep you from getting stuck on, or off the road.

"You know if you have bald tires you're going to slide even more on ice & snow," Poor says.

Even if you have good tires, he tells drivers to slow down.

"It's real important to take some extra time and allow extra space for breaking"

Eddie Whiteman runs a towing company and he says this week's storm has been out of this world.

He explains, "The blinding snow has been something I haven't seen in the last 20 years...you're just driving and it is a complete whiteout."

That's why both Poor and Whiteman insist you keep a few key items in your car...

Non-perishable food, water, blankets, flashlights, and a shovel are necessary.

We're told, "The best safety kit you can have is a charged cell phone so that you can call for help as opposed to trying to flag somebody down with a flare or a flashlight."

The best way to prepare for the nightmare winter weather in Erie is to move to another town. Anyplace is better (and safer for your family) than Erie during the winter.
