January 31, 2013 - A long standing relationship between Gannon University and the City of Erie continues today with a big investment in downtown Erie.

A $1.1 million investment in lights will spread over 18 city blocks.

GannonUniversity's investment is sure to light up the campus and downtown.

One hundred and four LED lights were installed from Peach to Chestnut Streets on West Third, Fourth, Fifth, Sixth, Seventh and Eighth streets.

The University has had a long lasting relationship with the city which Gannon grad and Erie Mayor is thankful for.

"Part of our plan was neighborhood revitalization and Gannon has really helped with the neighborhoods around their campus," Mayor Sinnott said.

This investment was student driven by the university's Student Government Association 2012 president Landis Erwin.

Dr. Keith Taylor, Gannon President, says the University wants students to become global citizens.

He says this project exemplifies that.

"We engage the students about dialogue about what's important to the organization what's important to their neighborhoods," Dr. Taylor said.

Through Erwin's hard work along with other members of SGA, the lights were installed across campus.

She graduated from Gannon last year, but she says every time she visits campus or drives by, she's proud of what she helped accomplish.

"It feels amazing," Erwin said. "It's just really exciting to know you had an impact."

Gannon's administration, Office of Campus Police and Safety and the Office of Campus Services worked together to achieve the finished product.
