Weather Causing Increased Damage to Roads and Water Mains

February 11th, 2013

Our local weather has been like a roller coaster ride.
One day it's cold, the next, pretty warm - like today.

The freeze - thaw snow cycle is causing a major increase in damaged roads and even potentially causing water main breaks.

Crews all around Erie County are working around the clock to fix damages caused by the freezing and thawing of snow.

Whether it's a water main break or a pot hole, crews from Erie Water Works and local street departments are busy working to fix those problems.

Erie Water Works CEO Paul Vojtek says it's hard to completely pin point the exact cause of a water main break, but he says main breaks can definitely be attributed to changing temperatures.

And when it comes to the roads, Millcreek Township Supervisor Joe Kujawa says you can compare the formation of potholes to the process of making ice cubes in your freezer.

Kujawa says his crews are fixing hundreds of potholes in Millcreek on a daily basis.
Vojtek also says crews are working just as hard to make sure main breaks are fixed before people even realize a water main break has happened.
