Day of Resistance Rally Scheduled for Saturday

watch video

February 21, 2013 - A city ordinance raises questions about a gun rally planned for this weekend in Perry Square.

On Saturday, the park may be filled with dozens of gun owners openly carrying their firearms as part of the national Day of Resistance.

Organizers say it's part of a national event.

According to the Open Carry Pennsylvania Facebook group, their mission is to protect and promote the fact that the open carry of firearms is a legal choice in Pennsylvania.

Justin Dillon, Erie resident, is the organizer of the group.

He is inviting anyone who is interested to Perry square on Saturday at noon to participate in the Day of Resistance.

The Facebook page says there will be rifles, AR15, AK47 and other firearms.

It goes on to say the main reason is to show people these guns are not so bad.

A city ordinance under hunting and firearms reads that no person shall use, carry or possess Firearms of any description in city parks and playground areas.

Captain M. at what point did i name call or insult you directly. seems in order to make a intelligent debate you have to resort to childish behavior to make your points. have a nice day. (in no way to i advocate insults, threats, or intimidation of anyone on either side of this issue i welcome all input as it is YOUR freedom of speech)

Hey people...NO reason to call people names, etc...THAT is what could lead to someone going off the wrong end about this here! Let's ALL just hope that Saturday SHOWS that people CAN get along with other's when guns ARE around, and people PLEASE use restraint when someone start's shouting or yelling out there, and PLEASE do NOT bring your Children into this...most are way too young to TRULY understand what anyone of you is trying to say or achieve, either the gun toter's, or the ones against guns! PLEASE "think" before you do!!!

Supporters of this event are harassing and threatening an individual who intends to protest this event. Is that what we want in Erie? Where we have seen so many violent deaths at the end of a gun? And free speech is to go only one way?

Tell that to all the Jews, Catholics and non Aries...if they could have defended themselves none of that horror would have happened, of course they could have Judy said "we are peaceful" and then what?

The illogic of your arguments is almost as apparent as your inability to use a keyboard. So here%u2019s some more bumbling, ranting, foaming at the mouth bs for you packing heat in the trashcan. Firstly, the choice between pacifism and violence is made when you obtain a gun. A car is not designed for the purpose of killing (even though it can be used so). You don't buy a car to kill someone. Cars are designed for and used far more often in their purpose of transportation to make your analogy worthless. Operating any vehicle is a privilege, not a right (unlike owning a deadly firearm). It's the alcohol a drunk driver consumes (which kills millions of people every year from alcoholism as well) that is the causative factor. If you buy and consume alcohol, you are purchasing something which is inherently designed to poison and intoxicate. So you buy alcohol to poison yourself. And so you buy a gun to kill something %u2013 not for misperceived protection. If you buy an assault rifle, your intention is to kill quite a few people %u2013 not to protect yourself from many people. And to brandish such a murderous implement in a public place is a clear demonstration of your preparedness and willingness to do so. So join the army. The revolutionaries who wrote the Constitution and the Bill of Rights were fighting a war against 3 occupying armies - not against our present day elected government. And they fought with flintlock muzzle loaders %u2013 not banana clip uzis and bushmasters. Your argument about a bad government%u2019s misguided sense of pacifism that wants you to die for pacifism reeks of Branch Davidian paranoia. It's far more dangerous to be a pacifist than a revolutionary. Just ask Gandhi or John Lennon or the Dalai Llama or Martin Luther King Jr. And lastly, your Open Carry fanaticism for guns cannot bring you peace or security. It can only bring you violence and heartbreak and disaster and worry and suffering and ruin and death - which are exactly what guns are designed for. Fanaticism for any violent cause is unwholesome %u2013 %u201CIn the fevered state of our country, no good can ever result from any attempt to set one of these fiery zealots to rights, either in fact or principle. They are determined as to the facts they will believe, and the opinions on which they will act. Get by them, therefore, as you would by an angry bull; it is not for a man of sense to dispute the road with such an animal.%u201D Thomas Jefferson.

Captain M. you are absolutely correct.. guns are only designed to kill. What you are forgetting is WHO they are used to kill. In the hands of a police officer they can be used to kill criminals and innocents alike. In the hands of a potential victim, they can be used to kill those who are threatening to take their lives. in the hands of an evil person they can take the life of many innocent people. The problem is Captain M. is you are unwilling to acknowledge that its the person behind the gun that CHOOSES who the gun kills. and just like even car in the hands of a drunk person (which by the way kills 8 times more people a year than your "demon guns") might i recommend you take a moment aback and realize that there are GOOD PEOPLE in this world. more so than BAD PEOPLE and when GOOD PEOPLE are armed and presented with BAD PERSON WANTING TO KILL THEM, the GOOD PERSON CAN SAVE THEIR OWN LIFE (call 911 and be a victim) with your "evil only one purpose gun ...ps it works well in this purpose at that point" and SAVES AN INNOCENTS LIFE FROM A BAD PERSON. so yes Captain M. guns KILL. and there is alot more GOOD PEOPLE in this world than there is BAD PEOPLE. our country, our forefathers, the common sense individual recognizes the need for GOOD PEOPLE to be able to defend themselves and carry GUNS THAT KILL.....the bad people. To allow those of irrational or power hungry ill intents to remove the ability to defend ourselves not only from BAD PEOPLE but also BAD GOVERMENT...is exactly why our forefathers set the bill of RIGHTS. not the bill of GOOD TILL PACIFISTS DECIDE ITS BETTER YOU DIE FOR THEIR MISGUIDED SENSE OF PACIFICATION (VICTIM)

Your response is even more infantile than your child's. How can any 7 year old have a sensible opinion regarding a deadly weapon or your self-perceived duty to protect him/her from our elected president? The gun violence disaster and the illegal drugs disaster are 2 completely different problems. Illegal drugs are distributed by criminals whereas weapons are mass produced by companies and sold at Wal-Mart. Guns are just like illegal drugs in that their only purpose is to harm another human being. Guns are designed for only one purpose - to kill. But taking them away will only solve half of the problem. The other half of the problem are fear-mongering idiots like you and the Open Carry Militia at Perry Square.

True assault rifles may be a tad overboard but so is the president's idea of gun control. Our second amendment rights must be protected. Even my 7 year old sees this. It's not the gun that pulls the trigger! It is the person behind the gun! Taking our guns away will not solve the problem. Did making drugs illegal stop them from being distributed or even keep them from being given to our children? No.

Anyone who feels the need to openly brandish an assault rifle like an AK or AR, especially in a center city park, is sick and needs to be hospitalized. I don't care what your delusion about Constitutional rights is, I have the greater right to be protected from anti-social fringe group maniacs like these. Your misperceived patriotism is born of fear, hate, and impotence.
