Mercyhurst University Breaks Two Guinness Records

In a 24-hour challenge called the EnduROWthon, Mercyhurst University broke two records on Friday, March 8, at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center.

The first record was broken Friday afternoon. The first record was a new record, according to Philip Robertson, adjudicator from Guinness World Records. The first record broken was for most people rowing on a single erg in a 24-hour period. The number continued to grow throughout the night, but organizers say more than 500 people rowed.

The second record was for the 10 member rowing team to row the greatest distance on a rowing machine in a 24-hour period. The men's team broke the 251.99 thousand miles record (set by a Hungarian team in 2008) shortly before 7pm Friday evening.

Although the Mercyhurst community is celebrating both records being broken, Robertson said that the men's record has to be analyzed over the course of 5-6 weeks by Guinness officials.
