Local 5th Grader Headed to Nat Geo Semifinal Competition

watch video
March 18, 2013 - Nine year old Kevin Hogan of Erie's JoAnna Connell School is a semifinalist in the Pennsylvania National Geographic Bee. He is one of only 100 Pennsylvania students to participate in this competition.

Geography bees, much different from spelling bees, were held in schools with fourth through eighth grade students throughout Pennsylvania to determine each school's winner. Then, the school winners had to take a qualifying test, with results being submitted to the National Geographic Society. The NGS then chose students to participate in the state semifinals based on their performance on the test, and Kevin Hogan was one of those select few.

The state winner will head to Washington DC for the finals, which will be moderated by Alex Trebek.

The semifinals will take place on April 5 at the Eisenhower Hotel and Conference Center in Gettysburg, PA.
Good luck, Kevin!

Wonderful! Fifth grader doing so well in geography. They didn't have the NATGEO stuff going on when I was that young. I couldn't even find a teaching program for geography at any college and had to take political science. Yale, I believe has a program and UCLA. Good luck, Kevin!
