State University Contract Negotiations

Professors at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania and other state schools could walk off their jobs Monday after their contract expires at midnight on June 30th.

Professors cleaned out their offices at Edinboro Saturday in preparation for the possible strike.

The university is one of 14 schools in the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education.  A possible strike could affect 25,000 students currently enrolled in summer school statewide.

Professors could take to the picket lines in front of the Edinboro campus as soon as Monday.

However, both the union and the state say that a strike is not what they want to see.

"We are all hopeful," said Edinboro University Professor Ron Spiller.  "The last thing we want to do is walk out.  Our life, essentially, is teaching and dealing with students," he said.

"The number one concern we have as a university is that our students graduate on time, without interruption," said Brian Pitzer, head of Edinboro University's public relations department.  "We're very much concerned about their success so we are hopeful that a strike can be avoided," he added.

If teachers walk out it would be the first professor strike in the history of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education.
