Fire Protection in Millcreek May Change

The volunteer fire departments in Millcreek have battled manpower shortages for years. The biggest problems come during the day: from 6:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. That`s why Millcreek Township paid a consultant $50,000 to figure out what to do about the shortage of daytime firefighters. The consultant`s findings, which include a number of options, were released to members of the five fire departments during a Tuesday night. Those options include consolidating all five volunteer fire departments into one or two departments. Another idea is staffing selected fire houses during the day with available volunteers or paid firefighters. If that option is selected, taxpayers could be asked to pay the cost of staffing firehouses if the departments can`t afford it. Township supervisors will get the final say, but no word on when a decision will be made.
