Community leaders are making a plea for public support as cuts in federal funding continue to plague Erie Countys less fortunate. Erie County Executive Mark Divecchio and Erie Mayor Joe Sinnott announced a joint effort to raise awareness about the funding problem. Over the past six years money for Eries Housing Authoritys public assistance program has been cut 22 percent.
As a result, 140 fewer families are being helped this year, and the number is expected to rise. Community leaders believe a united front from the public and elected officials might help to restore some of that money. Horan says currently 3-thousand people in our area are waiting for public housing assistance.
