Arrest in Gannon University Phone Threat

watch video
A Former Gannon student is under arrest after allegedly phoning another student and telling her there would be a massacre on campus. 19-year old Valerie Cantu of the 700 block of West 16th Street is charged with making Terroristic Threats and Harassment by Communication. News of the threat quickly spread and of course that raised the tension level on campus. It took only 12 hours from the time the threat was received until police made an arrest. They took this threat very seriously in wake of the Virginia Tech Shooting last week. Cantu allegedly phoned another Gannon student around 1 A.M. Wednesday morning and told her “don't go to school today, there is going to be another massacre.” The victim immediately phoned campus security and authorities wasted no time in beginning their investigation. Officials did not shut down the campus. Despite the alleged threat, it was business and classes as usual, expect for an increase in police presence. Several Erie police officers along with Gannon security patrolled the campus until they found and arrested their suspect. Police say they tracked down the number of the cell phone allegedly used in the threat. They then phoned the suspect and asked her to come to police headquarters where she was questioned and later arrested.
