Since the massacre at Virginia tech university, the issue of mental health has been discussed at length.
There is no cure for mental illness, but with treatment and proper follow up, there is no reason that person cannot lead a normal life. Miki Hammond is proof of that.
Miki was diagnosed with mental illness several years ago. She was clinically depressed and was within minutes of taking her own life when she happened upon the services of Safe Harbor Behavioral Health. Her depression was so severe it required hospitalization, medication and extensive therapy. But now, Hammond is there for others who suffer from mental illness. After extensive training she is now an employee of Safe Harbor. Hammond is called upon to meet with patients who have reached the end of their rope.
Now when you show up at the emergency room and having a mental health issue, chances are you'll talk to Hammond.
She says she's trusted in a different way and they understand she knows what they know and it seems to be remarkably reassuring Hammond says 85% of people diagnosed with mental illness respond to treatment, and she is a perfect example of how someone can overcome the illness and help others deal with it.
