Albion State Prison Under Fire by Former Inmate's Family

watch video

A family is speaking out after they say their relative was neglected at the State Prison in Albion.

Paula Thomas is outraged after her 48 year old brother Dennis Austin died on January 1st at the Albion Prison.

WARNING: The pictures in the video are extremely graphic.

They were given to us by the family.

Dennis Austin was diagnosed with lung and bone cancer July 8th.

His sister says it was all downhill after that.

The images show the numerous bedsores Austin acquired when he was in the infirmary.

Thomas says that when she visited her brother she couldn't see the bedsores because he was always covered under a sheet.

Thomas asked the funeral director to take pictures so she could document what she claims is neglect.

We've learned the pictures were reviewed by Erie County Forensic Pathologist Dr. Eric Vey of the Coroner's Office.

He said, "The care was not only adequate but probably as good as one would find in a regular hospital and that the photographs indicated decubiti that would be expected in a long term bedridden situation."

Thomas wants to continue to fight for her brother and for others she says may be in the same situation.

She says they are looking into hiring an attorney to see if they have a case.

Everyone, including Rebecca R. needs to see the forest through the trees here! Dr. Eric Vey, of the Coroner's office, says if you find similar outrageous wounds on the body of a loved one after lengthy hospitalization or a stay at an inpatient rehab./ skilled nursing facility we all should consider this adequate and acceptable. Probably as good as we should expect in a regular (local) hospital he says. ...really? Quality care in a skilled nursing facility sometimes demands, If a patient has limited mobility or is non-ambulatory, to be turned every two-three hrs. max. to prevent these type of horrific Decubitus Ulcers. Dr.Vey is either not being objective to cover for the State Prison responsibility & accountability or unaware of prevention techniques. Hopefully he hasn't a Sociopathic and subconscious delight in knowing a convected felon literally rotted 'til death while in prison! Furthermore, what if an inmate whom may have been wrongfully convicted was found innocent in an appeal trial and was later released. Will having this kind of "adequate" treatment seem OK to those who leave alive with holes and/or infection in their body where there weren't previously? Dr. Vey's comments and opinions, outside scientific findings of fact, should be censored from now on or he should be replaced!
