It can happen in a second, a police officer shot in the line of duty. We saw it happen earlier this week to a state trooper in Summit Township. Lt. Joe Kress with the Erie Police Department can relate to Trooper Short's close encounter. Back in March of 1991, Kress was shot in the thigh, while responding to the residence of a known drug dealer. The bullet barely missed one of his arteries. He spent six months recovering from the wound. Kress says dozens of law enforcement officers are killed in the line of duty each year. He says Trooper Short's incident is a reminder of how dangerous the job can be.
