Seneca Nation I-90 Tax
As of Friday morning at 12:01 the Seneca Indian Tribe began counting the number of vehicles using a three mile stretch of Interstate 90 in New York. This three mile stretch of thru-way runs across the Seneca Nation's Cattauragus Indian Reservation, so the Seneca's are hoping all the motorists using this highway will eventually pay off in their behalf.
In 1954, a resolution allowed part of the state thru-way to cross the reservation which the Seneca's rescinded last month, saying the agreement was never approved by the federal government.
Now, they want compensation. So, the Seneca's are going to charge New York State, $1 for every motorist using the three mile stretch of I-90.
To keep track, the Seneca Nation, plans on getting numbers from two toll booths, one to the north of Lackawanna and one to the south in Ripley.
New York drivers had differing views on the idea. Motorists won't see any charge in this tax.
