Mercyhurst Cancels 4th Celebration

watch video
Mercyhurst College has announced that it is no longer going to host its Old Fashioned 4th of July Celebration. Instead, it will give the City of Erie $500,000.

The money will be given over a three-year period.

That money will be used to help fund the cost of a 4th of July fireworks display on Presque Isle Bay, centered around Liberty Park.

However, other than fireworks, no other activities are planned at this time for July 4th this year. College officials say the celebration just grew too large for its hilltop campus. This year the fireworks will be launched from a barge on the water. Its hoped in future years, the city of Erie or the Port Authority may expand the event. The Mercyhurst celebration grew to be a summer time favorite of tens of thousands of people each 4th of July.
