Erie City Council Approves New LERTA

watch video

October 3, 2012 - A tax break designed to spur development in the City of Erie is getting a new lease on life as council approves an extension of the LERTA program.

The local economic revitalization tax assistance program gives property owners in the target area a ten year tax break on new construction or renovations with the LERTA decreasing by 10% every year.

In non-target areas, a five year tax break will be available with a 20% decrease per year.

The original ordinance excluded a section of the waterfront, but after an amendment from Councilwoman Jessica Horan-Kunco, a section of the waterfront is now included.

The area is a portion of water front property south of the bluff and north of the midline of Second Street.

It's now part of the non-target LERTA.

The LERTA program was set to expire in November.

The Erie School District as well as Erie County Council have to vote as well.
