HARRISBURG (OCTOBER 29) -The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for the Erie Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) rose to 7.7 percent in September, and increase of one-tenth of a percentage point over the month. Despite this slight up-tic, the MSA's unemployment rate has been below 8.0 percent for twelve consecutive months and was down three-tenths of a percentage point over the year. The Erie MSA had the 7th lowest unemployment rate among Pennsylvania's 14 MSAs in September. Among Pennsylvania's 67 counties, rates ranged from 5.8 in Montour County to 11.5 in Cameron County, with Erie County's unemployment rate tied with three others for the 26th lowest. Pennsylvania's unemployment rate added one-tenth of a percentage point to 8.2 percent from August, while the national rate dropped three-tenths to 7.8 percent.
In September, seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs declined 1,400 in the Erie MSA to 133,700. Despite two consecutive months of declines, jobs in the MSA were up 3,000 from one year ago. Compared to the other MSAs in Pennsylvania, Erie had the second largest over-the-year growth rate (2.3%) and was more than three times the statewide rate of 0.7 percent. Detailed industry data for the MSA is not seasonally adjusted (see below).
With the academic year underway at schools and universities, education and health services added 300 jobs. This was the smallest September increase for the supersector in 20 years.
Leisure and hospitality employers released temporary seasonal workers as the summer vacation months came to a close, cutting 1,300 jobs in September.
The start of the school year also impacted state and local government jobs, which rose by 900 and 1,000 respectively, in-line with historic increases.
