Erie City Police Department Budget Over because of Overtime
it revealed that the police overtime budget is over by more than 79 thousand dollars, and the fire department's overtime budget is on track.
According to the Department of Public Safety's Police, personnel and operating expenses, overtime hours were supposed to tally up to $790,000.
They are now sitting at just over $869,000. That means the budget for overtime is about $79,000 over.
Chief Franklin says this shouldn't be alarming as police have to work overtime due to the rash of gun violence and other crimes.
In addition, police are needed in court.
Chief Franklin says the overtime is much needed to combat the crime, and it is cheaper to give out overtime than to hire and staff more officers.
In addition, Fire Chief Pol says the fire departments budget is on track.
Overtime for the department sits at $18,400.
Twenty-five thousand dollars was budgeted, with more than $6,000 dollars remaining.
