Autism Spectrum Disorder Explained
It's been mentioned several times that Adam Lanza was diagnosed with Asperger's Disorder, but Dr. Maureen Barber-Carey of the Barber National Institute says it wouldn't cause him to do such a violent act.
Autism is a neurological spectrum disorder characterized by difficulties in communication skills, social integration and repetitive behaviors.
It's a spectrum disorder that affects people differently.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, one in every 110 children have an autism spectrum disorder.
Lanza allegedly had Asperger's Disorder and classmates say he was withdrawn, but Dr. Barber-Carey says there is no connection between Asperger's and violent acts.
Dr. Barber-Carey says just because of this incident, we shouldn't connect everyone with Asperger's to violent behavior and this incident.
"I really encourage parents if they hear autism, think positive," said Dr. Barber-Carey. "Children with autism have so many, many talents and it's a great opportunity if you have a child who is typical to interact with a child on the spectrum. They are no one to be fearful of."
