Not So Icy Ice Wine
January 10, 2013
With the temperatures creeping up into the 50's this weekend...it's been hard for grape harvesters to produce a fan favorite... Ice wine...
It's something that most wine connoisseurs look forward to...Mazza Vineyard's annual ice wine...
But instead of the norm, this year will be a little different.
Despite the fact that the grapes were very ripe and it was an excellent growing year...that means they won't last very long.
And with the fairly mild temperatures this year...including this weekend's project forecast in the mid 50s....
Mazza was forced to make a decision.
Employees are harvesting the grapes and then will freeze them...they can't actually label their product ice wine this year... So they're calling it faux wine.
And even though Mazza assures us the faux wine will taste identical to the true ice wine...he's concerned for the future of the industry....
Telling us if they waited another day to harvest the grapes this year, they wouldn't have had a season.
