The animals at the Humane Society were jumping for joy when they got a special visit from a local girl with an armload of gifts.

She wanted the animals to celebrate her 8th birthday with her.

Traci Teudhope introduces us to this week's Good Kid.

Eight-year-old Mela Brown sacrificed birthday presents this year in an effort to take gifts to her furry friends instead.

But why?

Mela Brown: "I had an old dog that died on my birthday and since then I just really love animals."

This young lady says it's a win - win situation.

Mela Brown: "I know when I do something like this its going to help the animals, and it makes me happy too."

This 2nd grader truly has a philanthropic spirit, and she says she already has everything she needs.

Melissa Brown, Mela's mom: "It was all her idea. She just said 'I dont want presents. I want to donate stuff to animals.'" So we went on the website and got their wish list and typed a note and sent it with invitations."

It's a gesture that makes her parents very proud.

Melissa Brown: "To see her doing it at such a young age, it makes us very proud of her."

Mela sees this as a small step to jumpstart to her future.

Mela Brown, 8 yrs old: "I want to be a vet when I'm older; and I know if I'm donating stuff here, I'm getting a good start to my career. I love animals."
