"When Hearts Attack"

January 23, 2013

The American Heart Association is partnering with the Erie 911 call center for a community coalition called "When Hearts Attack."

The pilot campaign will also partner with businesses, first responders and public officials in Erie.

Erie was chosen because it's a good sample representation of western Pennsylvania, being an urban city surrounded by rural areas.

The coalition is meant to raise awareness, but it's about more than just knowing the signs of a heart attack.

They want people to "commit to call" 911 at the first sign of a heart attack.

Calling EMS could prevent long-term extensive damage to your heart if you are having a heart attack.

Some people recognize the signs, yet still put off calling for emergency medical attention.

The "When Hearts Attack" coalition will meet periodically over the next two years.

They will eventually use hospital data to see how well the pilot program did with increasing the volume of 911 calls for heart attack victims.
