Safety as Simple as Remembering the Word ICE

January 23rd, 2013

After an open bay last year, ice fishermen are happy to see below freezing temps as the bay begins to freeze.

Sons of Lake Erie member, Bob Zawadski, has been monitoring the bay for years. He says this ice isn't thick enough yet.

Coast Guard officials have safety tips. It's as simple as remembering the word ice.

I stands for intelligence. Check the weather and ice conditions and know where you're going.

C stands for clothing. Wear the proper anti-exposure clothes with multiple layers and a dry suit.

And E stands for equipment. Make sure you have a radio, life jackets and a screw driver to help you gain traction if you fall in unexpectedly.

Local bait shops are also enjoying the frozen bay.

They say business picks up because of ice fishers.
